Background

The USMNT is set to play their opening match of the 2022 CONCACAF Nations League tourney. We’re the reigning champs, so we’re looking to keep the magic alive!

This match comes at an interesting time, right in the middle of our World Cup preparation. This will be our 3rd match in 3 days, following a 3-0 win over Morocco and 0-0 draw against Uruguay.

What we’ll be looking for..

Including this match, I believe we only have 4 more matches to go before the World Cup, so it’s expected that Berhalter will be trying out various lining and testing out some new players. But unlike Morocco & Uruguay, this is actually a competitive match. That being said.. Grenada is a much weaker team than we’ve played in a while. So on the one hand, I think it’s still a prime opportunity for new talent to touch the field. But on the other hand, regulations will allow for fewer subs compared to the friendlies. I’m very curious to see what Gregg prioritizes for tonights match:

  • Option A: Test out some of the players on the fence
  • Option B: Use it as a (hopeful) confidence builder and mind-setter

I think it’ll be a blend of the two. Notably Option A at the striker position and center back, with Option B in our midfield.

Our predictions

  1. Haji Wright will start, and Ferreira will come in in the second half. This is a golden opportunity for the to get some goals under their belt and showoff what they got.
  2. Christian Pulisic will dominate the highlights. Get it.. highlights! (sorry, will see myself out). But seriously, he coming out with a bold new look. He’s looking for all the smoke and has a chip on his shoulder coming off a frustrating close to the Chelsea season. He stepping up to the challenge and wants all eyes on him. I’m expecting some magic tonight!
  3. Luca de la Torre will get the start. He’s been playing incredible, and is in the midst of trying to land a deal with a new European team for next season. Would love to see Gregg support his efforts by giving him a starting slot and heavy minutes. Maybe in place of McKennie, allowing him to close out the game and minimize his minutes as he’s still getting back to form from his injury.
